Hockey is a sport played on ice where two teams try to score goals by hitting a small puck into the opponent’s net using sticks. It started in Canada during the mid-1800s when people began playing an outdoor game similar to field hockey but adapted for winter conditions.
The first organized indoor hockey game was held in Montreal, Canada, in March 1875. Over time, rules were developed, including having six players per team—three forwards, two defensemen, and one goaltender.
In 1893, Lord Stanley donated a trophy called the Stanley Cup, which became the championship prize for professional hockey leagues. The National Hockey League (NHL) formed in 1917 with four Canadian teams before expanding across North America.
Today, hockey remains popular worldwide, especially in countries like Canada, Russia, Sweden, Finland, Czech Republic, Slovakia, and the United States. Major tournaments include the Winter Olympics and World Championships. Players wear protective gear such as helmets, pads, gloves, skates, and uniforms representing their respective teams or nationalities.
