Until 1970, football was considered an exclusively men’s sport.
But women began to play football in the XIX century. Historical records mention a meeting of women’s teams from England and Scotland.
Lady Florence Caroline Dixie played a major role in the creation of women’s football. In 1895, an English aristocrat headed the British women’s football club “British Ladies’ Football Club”.
On March 23, 1895, the first Crouch End match was held between the women of England, divided according to the territorial principle: north versus south.
During the same period of time, a trip with charity demonstration matches from London to Scotland took place. Within two years, the women’s football team played about 100 matches.
Women’s football did not find support, and the club’s activities came to an end.
The First World War gave an impetus to the development of women’s football in England. Girls from defense factories in the men’s game found an outlet for themselves from hard work.
In 1920, the first international match took place. Its participants were the team “Dick, Kerr Ladies” and the French club, which was headed by Alice Milliat.
1950-1960 Amateur women’s soccer teams are being formed in Europe and the USA.
In 1991 FIFA is organizing the first FIFA World Cup. The USA national team became the first world champions among women, beating the Norwegian national team with a score of 2:1.
In 1996, at the XXVI Games in Atlanta, for the first time in the history of the Olympic Games, medals were awarded in football among women’s teams.
In 2018, for the first time in history, the Golden Ball award was awarded to a football player. The winner was Ada Hegerberg, a Norwegian football player striker of the Lyon club.
